Two years after moving to San Francisco, Riley is now 13 and about to start high school. Inside her mind, her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust—have created a “Sense of Self” area that holds her core memories and personality traits. Joy has developed a system to push negative memories to the back of Riley’s mind.

Riley and her friends, Bree and Grace, are invited to a hockey camp where she hopes to join her school’s team, the Firehawks. Before the camp starts, a “Puberty Alarm” triggers an upgrade to the emotion console, causing Riley to overreact to emotional inputs. Four new emotions—Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Anxiety—appear, leading to clashes with the original emotions. Anxiety’s desire for Riley to fit in and succeed at camp contrasts with Joy’s focus on having fun.

When Joy’s insistence on fun gets the team in trouble, Anxiety hides the Sense of Self and imprisons the original emotions, creating a corrupted Sense of Self with negative memories. This strains Riley’s friendships and influences her to befriend a popular player, Val. As Riley’s old emotions escape and retrieve the original Sense of Self, they return to find Anxiety’s efforts have led to self-doubt.

During a crucial hockey game, Riley’s emotions spiral, causing her to panic. The original emotions convince Anxiety to stop trying to control Riley’s personality. They remove the corrupted Sense of Self, allowing a new, balanced Sense to form. Riley calms down, reconciles with her friends, and finishes the game with renewed confidence.

Later, Riley starts high school, balancing friendships with Bree, Grace, and Val while staying true to herself. The emotions, old and new, now work together to support Riley’s evolving Sense of Self. Riley checks her phone for the Firehawks’ team list, smiling proudly at her reflection.
